Using Educational Toys to Support Classroom Learning

August 30th, 2010 by darlev

School is not always the bright, happy place we hope it will be for our children. Some kids have difficulty fitting in, are bullied or may not be able to keep up with the other children academically. Each child learns at their own pace and may benefit from being taught using different methods or resources. Making learning fun through utilizing educational toys will benefit your child.

When young children get too far behind at school, they generally lose all confidence in their abilities. By providing children with alternative ways to learn other than the classroom you will help them regain confidence in their abilities. Using educational toys at home in a relaxed setting will allow you and your child to bond and learn together. Some children prefer to learn through sight, touch or sound and this may not always be possible at school. Offering toys that provide real hands on experience will allow your child to learn through their own preferred method.

Children that struggle with maths and numbers on a blackboard may well do better with a traditional brightly colored abacus where they can physically count the beads or subtract beads from one another. If your child is drawn to books but reading is a struggle, opt for books that they love looking at. Books with colorful pictures and activities will encourage a love for books and the reading skills will develop later as you read to them. Wooden blocks that can be built up and knocked down can be used to great advantage for the pre-school learner. The engineer or demolition expert can use these blocks to identify the picture or number on them whilst building a high tower and then identify colours when the wooden blocks have been demolished.

There are so many educational toys available that parents would do well to obtain a broad spectrum of them. Some children are absolute Einstein’s when it comes to maths, but perform poorly in English, whilst other children wouldn’t be able to spell scientist but love to perform experiments. The educational toys on offer today range from traditional toys and pop-up books, to science and nature kits. By offering this range to your child you will be able to see where their interest lies, encourage their confidence and then tailor the educational material to suit their interests. For example, if a child is keen on nature but doesn’t enjoy reading, try them with a nature kit and buy books about nature with lots of pictures and activities.

When children gain confidence doing something they enjoy it motivates them to try harder in other areas. Becoming the best speller in a class may help to offset the feeling of failure for being in the bottom 3 at maths. Lack of self confidence can often manifest itself in what seems to be behavioral problems in children, when in fact they may just need a confidence boost. Educational toys cannot solve every academic or behavioral problem in children but they are good tools that parents can use to encourage their child to success.

Are Animals Dumb? Language In The New Age

August 23rd, 2010 by darlev

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Are animals dumb? I have heard that said before. As we are evolving into the next step of human evolution, everything about how we interact will change. When I am looking for examples of how humans will be, I always look to two groups to give me the answers. One is young children under 10 and the other is nature. One of the characteristics of new human behavior is the attribute of unconditional love for all things and knowing that we are all connected by an invisible web. This shift into unity consciousness is constantly bringing up questions for me about how we will change in different areas that are present now. Like eating, shelter, daily activities and as in my last article – language and communication. This is a continuation of the discussion of language in the new age.

We like to think that we are better than animals because we have the ability to think and speak. I always thought that this notion was kind of elitist, but since my awakening in 2000 I know this to be a myth. I am no different than that whale in the ocean or the ant crawling along the dirt. We like to separate our selves from animals because that is how we have been. We have lived in a consciousness of duality where we believe that we are separate. Not only separate but better than the animals and also each other. To use animals as anything to emulate is a silly concept. Isn’t it? Anyone who studies animal behavior or is a true animal lover may not agree.

In my last article, I brought up the point that we may use non verbal communication as opposed to speaking with words as words leaves room for misinterpretation. Communicating by using body language, eye to eye contact and possibly telepathically are some examples of non verbal communication. Mass consciousness is a concept that modern physics is just scratching the surface on and if you read science journals you will see that objects communicating through an unseen connecting web is now almost considered a fact in quantum physics. This web is what new age spiritualists (labels are so limiting and divisive) have talked about for 20 years or longer. Is communicating with each other in this way so far fetched?

Look at the animals. How do they communicate? They seem to know what the others in their flock or herd are doing or going to do. How do they do that? I believe that they do that through the unseen web that connects them. Animal scientists will also say that many species use differing verbal sounds to communicate different things. Things like threats that are nearby or where to find food sources. Have you ever watched birds? If one finds some interesting morsel they all seem to come out of nowhere to join in. The insect world is a great example of non verbal communication. They are amazing at getting together as a unit to accomplish whatever they attempt. Ants are a beautiful example of co-operation and living in harmony with each other. They, to me, have a very sophisticated level of communication between each other. We use the word “dumb” at times to describe someone who doesn’t speak. Are animals dumb just because they don’t speak words like we do?

I was reading an article about the problem Tokyo was having with crows. The crow population has wildly increased in the last 10 years and they are causing problems with the electrical grid. They are nesting on power poles and shorting out transformers causing power outages. Tokyo’s electric company has a special brigade of workers that go around and spot nests and destroy them. The article was about how the crows have adapted to this attack on their nests by building “dummy” nests that are empty in an attempt to divert the “crow brigade” away from the real nests. Doesn’t sound very dumb to me. Do animals think? This must take some pretty high level communication between them to accomplish this trickery and also some process of thought.

Communication between the cetaceans (whales and dolphins) has been well documented and studied. Of course from my “wild” perspective it is obvious that these mammals would have a very intricate level of communication as I believe that they possess the highest, most enlightened consciousness of any species on earth, including humans. Their sounds may seem like chatter to us but what does our chatter sound like to them. Whales and dolphins are excellent examples of unity, harmony and heart to heart communication that will be attributes of human behavior in the new age.

You may say that animals are dumb creatures that just sit around all day and do nothing. How can we be like them.

We seem to gauge our existence and our worth by what we “do.” We run around, chase the dollar and are seemingly unhappy unless we are doing something. With new perspective on what life is and who we are, that behavior will also change. The animals probably look at us and say to each other “Those humans are sure silly. They race around in circles just to end back at the same spot and then think they are smarter than us because we just relax and enjoy the day.” Who are the enlightened ones?

It is well known that migrating animals use the unseen magnetic grid to guide them in their migrations. The idea that there is an unseen web for communication between us may seem the stuff of science fiction but it wasn’t long ago that gravity and magnetism occupied that same position in our consciousness. I know we like to proliferate the concept that if we can’t see it, isn’t real but surely there has been enough proof of grids around us that serve different purposes for us to believe that there may be a web that we tap into subconsciously to communicate with each other. Animals use it every day.

Language and communication for awakened humans on the new earth may resemble our animal brothers and sisters, where we use non verbal communication as our primary connection. Nature seems to get along just fine without words. I believe that we know that we are merely one species of animals, but for me to suggest that humans are the same as animals will probably not go over very well. Looking at the animals as an example of an enlightened human’s behavior makes perfect sense to me. They are certainly not dumb and their methods of communication are highly evolved. If we learn to trust non verbal communication as real and valid then it may be the new form of language for the new human on the new earth.

Then we can be “dumb” like the rest of the animals on earth

The Practical Use of Interactive Whiteboards in Class

August 22nd, 2010 by darlev

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The interactive whiteboards have a sensitive surface that the students can use to input data into the computer in the same way that a person uses a keyboard.

Interactive whiteboards are practical to use in all types of classes and in all school grades. Their use in lessons makes it interesting for young and older students alike. The teachers are able to use the boards in flexible and multiple ways because the boards can transmit text, pictures, video and sound. The size of the screen is also important for students who have eye impairment for the display is large enough for all to see clearly. The use of audio equipment such as speakers with the boards also makes them practical to use with students who have hearing impairment.

The other practical use of these whiteboards is that they allow the teachers to work with a lot of information. The information may be stored in a computer or may be gotten from websites and displayed onto the whiteboard. The boards also allow many students to use them at the same time.

Interactive whiteboards make it possible for teachers of elementary school children to display information from educative television programs and engage the pupils in interesting learning activities in the classroom. The other benefit that the boards give to elementary school children is that the teacher can draw a text representation, summarize it and explain it on the white board.

For pupils in higher elementary school grades, the whiteboard is practical in a number of ways. First, it assists the pupils in learning grammar for the pupils can use it to engage in interactive games teaching them grammatical skills. Other practical activities that the boards simplify are addressing the purpose of the author in stories. The teacher can easily test whether the children understood the topic by placing questions on the whiteboard and allowing the class to discuss.

The interactive whiteboards also make it easy for teachers to display virtual manipulation’s in teaching mathematics. The students can practice on their math skills using the boards where they can use visual images for their benefit. The whiteboards are also very practical for teaching science for the teacher can display three-dimensional images on them. They are therefore practical when the students have to analyze scientific images such as cloud layers, dissections of small animals in the laboratory and so forth.

The other practical use of the whiteboards is when students respond to information presented on the boards well because they can see the information clearly. They can understand material readily using interactive whiteboards because of the reason that the boards allow them to utilize a couple of learning styles. They can see, hear, touch, and in this way enhance how much information they understand.

The use of interactive whiteboards in class is therefore advantageous for all types of learners for they enhance lessons in a practical way.

Will Insects Rule After Humans Become Extinct?

August 20th, 2010 by darlev

Image : http://www.flickr.com

With all this global warming, climate change and climate cliff scares mankind is not sitting in such a wonderful place in the next period as our ancestors of the past period assumed we would be. And that led on online think tank recently to take up the subject of what if humans become extinct? After all the dinosaurs where much tougher creatures than we and they are all gone now you see?

One online think tank member Warren states; “I expect that they will be the ones who inherit the earth, not us; just consider the cockroach.”

Yes the predictions are in and there are many possible players; scorpions, cockroaches, locusts, bees, ants, squids and they are all much better adapted and robust than the human design for all the possibilities of cataclysmic evolution. However the large human brain and technology man is creating and the will to survive seems to be a heck of a great reason to not count the human species out entirely.

Partly mankind’s warring ways are driving him to these new technologies to protect him against the most deadly of all species; himself. Meaning he has good practice at being the top dog on the surface of the planet or right below its surface for many more moons. So, we must also consider that when predicting which species will dominate in the next 50,000 or so years. And I bet humans will not even look the same then. Consider it.

Sparking Students’ Interest Using Colored Paper and Binding

August 17th, 2010 by darlev

Image : http://www.flickr.com

As most teachers know, creating lesson plans and making bulletin boards are tasks they were able to practice and begin to master as part of their teacher preparation programs. What many programs fail to address is how to spark student interest in those lessons. As seasoned educational professionals know, getting the students interested in the assignment is often the biggest hurdle they must cross.

Student interest is often the differentiating factor between teachers who have established control of their classrooms and teachers who have not. Most of the time, students who act out are those who are feeling bored and who are not properly inspired to work. Good teachers know that there are simple things they can do to get students interested in projects and class work.

One of the ways teachers can stimulate a little interest is to vary the color of the paper assignments are printed on. This is especially beneficial for tougher assignments that most of them are disinclined to complete, much less enjoy. It seems like such a silly thing, but students do actually react to paper in a new color. Not only are students more interested in completing such work, they also sometimes are more careful with the work they submit on colored paper. It is a simple suggestion that probably won’t revolutionize your teaching, but if it results in increased participation, it’s worth a shot, right?

In that same vein, students like to see their names in print and their designs in use. Most of them relish the attention they receive from their peers when they are acknowledged for something they have done. For that reason, teachers should consider covering their bulletin boards and wall with the works of the students in the class instead of with commercial bulletin board kits. They like to admire each other’s work and will sometimes become competitive over who will do a better job on the next project.

Continuing with this idea of showcasing student work, teachers can keep files of each student’s best work which they can then assemble into a portfolio at the end of the semester or school year. Provided all of the items are the same size (like 8½ x 11), teachers can use a binding machine to punch holes into the documents and bind them into a single publication containing the best of each student’s work for the semester or year. Many kinds of binding machines are available, so educators need to think a bit about how many pages they will need to bind at a time and what types of covers they prefer.

In addition to using a binding machine to create student portfolios, teachers can also use the machine to create custom educational materials such as lab books, journals, and daily language notebooks. Educators may want to consider bringing the machine into the classroom to allow students to assemble their own journals or lab books. This allows them to see firsthand just how much effort goes into these things and can also provide them the opportunity to customize their own book somewhat (according to the teacher’s specifications).

Learning is at least a somewhat subjective process. By making a few simple changes in how teachers present information to students, it’s possible to teach students more by virtue of their increased interest in the educational materials themselves.

How to Become an Occupational Therapist

August 14th, 2010 by darlev

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The first step to a career in occupational therapy is learning how to become an occupational therapist, including the education, certification and job hunt. Your duties as an occupational therapist may include rehabilitating disabled workers, retraining individuals to improve their quality of life and advising offices and work sites on ergonomics and workplace design. This is a rewarding career where you’ll work with people hands on to make their lives better. If you have a caring nature and a strong work ethic, this might be the ideal job for you.

If you’re thinking of becoming an occupational therapist, you’ll need to start by taking classes in anatomy, anthropology, human development, physics, psychology, sociology and other related subjects. You may also want to volunteer to work with an occupational therapist to see if you like the job. A part time job at a hospital will also give you good experience that will help when you begin your career. Then if you still feel that occupational therapy is right for you, it is time to look at local programs to begin your education and training.

You must make sure that the program you choose is accredited; otherwise, it will be of little or no value in the job market or if you decide to continue your education later on. Occupational therapists in the United States must have a bachelor of science degree in occupational therapy and pass the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy. During your education, you will be better off if you assume you can’t get all of your experience out of books. You must be proactive about internships, volunteer jobs and part-time work that provide relevant experience for your future career.

Once you are a registered occupational therapist, then you can decide what kind of environment you want to work in. There are occupational therapy jobs everywhere from hospitals and clinics to private offices and physical therapy centers. The pay is good, with a median salary of about $67,000 for this profession. If you have what it takes to finish the schooling and you work well with people, this could be your future career.

Find detailed information about top health care schools and best health care degree programs to become an occupational therapy technician at HealthDegreesU.com. Choose the best health care school in your prefered location and start your path to a rewarding career.
